Watching my kids eat I am truly thankful. Thankful that they won’t have a childhood like mine. A childhood where food was not always plentiful, or balanced. I remember being hungry. There were also times where I had no lunch to bring. The constant ” I forgot my lunch ” I could tell at a young age just wasn’t cutting it. I remember when I used to visit friends, I would marvel at the amount of food some people had. I was more than happy to accept offers for snacks after school.
Sadly I soon earned the nickname ” Moochie”
Times were tough. I can remember having only boiled potatoes for supper, and it was a treat if there was butter to go along with it. We pulled through, many times assisted from family and friends. The first food bank that was founded in Montreal was in 1984. I was born in 1971. There was no food bank to go to.
We know hunger is prevalent all over the world but many people are still surprised to know that here in Canada each month close to 900,000 families are in need of Food Banks. Surprised? Hunger doesn’t discriminate, it hits the belly hard and to people from all walks of life. So how can you help? Believe me when I say I am more than happy to tell you.
From May 7th to May 11th it’s Hunger Awareness week. You can help by encouraging your local MP to participate in Everyone wins with chicken MP listing a great contest. Encourage your local MP to submit their best, yummiest chicken sandwich recipe. They will have a chance to win one of three prizes for their local food bank.
Did you know for every 1$ donated to Food Banks Canada that equals to 8$ in food? Which means a lot of food. Check it out. First prize is 10,000$ ( $80,000 in food) 2nd prize is $5000 ( $40,000 in food ) and third prize is $2000 ( $16,000 in food). Quite an impact.
Plus on Canada Day in Ottawa the lucky MP who wins will have their recipe served to over 10,000 people at the 20th Annual Great Canadian Chicken BBQ. So with any of these prizes the amount of food that can be acquired is tremendous. How exciting is that?

I was very excited to be selected for this campaign by Food Banks Canada. This is a special contest in that it will make a huge difference to the three Food Banks who win, but more important it will make a difference to the families who need and depend on them. I urge you to be a part of this too.
As Mother Theresa said ” If you can’t feed a hundred people then just feed one.” We have the chance to help out through encouragement, through social media. So come and participate, there are prizes for you, but the best prize is knowing you’ve helped out.
I take comfort knowing “I am participating in the Chicken Farmers of Canada program by http://ShesConnected.com. and all the programs they have exist, that things are in place to prevent kids from going without. That is more than enough to soothe the child in me. My glass as always is more than half full. Of happiness.
Stay Positive and Pampered
