I went out to the local grocery store in my pajamas tonight. I was on my way to the last Girl Guide meeting and we were having our holiday party. I needed to pick up a few things to eat and drink.
I parked the van and walked in to where the grocery carts are. A lady was asking for donations for a charity, and she was looking at me in a funny way.
I told her I would give her something on the way out. I searched quickly for what I needed; there weren’t a lot of people in the store. I felt oddly as though I was being looked at.
The girl at the deli counter smiled at me as I walked by. I hoped she was smiling and not laughing.
I found the dairy section and grabbed some milk; I also picked up hummus and rice crackers, as well as some cookies. A lady beside me was looking at me and I thought
” Maybe my hair looks weird?”
Finding everything I needed I headed to the front to check out and hurry on my way.The two ladies at the cash register were wearing Santa hats.” Nice hats, I commented.”
The said thanks and again smiled. I remember to go see the lady at the door for a donation. I handed it to her and she thanked me. It was then as I balanced my purse on my knee to put my wallet back in that I realized I was wearing my pajamas.
I laughed out loud.
I completely forgot I was going to do the errands after work when I was dressed too avoid this situation. The party tonight was a pajama party. I mentioned this to the woman that just took my donation.
” I’m on my way to a pajama party.” She smiled at me as if to say, ” sure you are.” Off I went in my very colorful, cheery pajamas with my head held high.
I quietly hummed Patsy Cline’s Walking After Midnight, but singing my own lyrics.
” I go out walking, in pajamas. In the Bright lights of the local grocery store.
I go our walking, for my girl guides, searching for food.”
You just have to laugh at the awkward moments in life, even if it means owning it and laughing at yourself.
